Outside the Box3 at Whitespace – The Mordes Collection
2805 N. Australian Avenue, West Palm Beach, Florida 33407
Exhibition Dates: Friday & Saturday, April 1 – 2, 2016, 7:30p – 10:30 pm
OUTSIDE THE BOX 3 is the third biennial to be hosted by Elayne Mordes at her perfectly situated scenic waterfront site Whitespace, in Palm Beach, which also houses her enviable international collection. 43 proposals were selected to interact with the unique landscape & outdoor environment. This temporary outdoor art happening will take place April 1 & 2, 2016, as part of the closing weekend festivities of Whitespace-The Mordes Collection’s annual show.
The distinctive and alternative format of the exhibit asks artists to propose a temporary work, suitable for outdoors that will respond creatively to the site, or be interactive in nature. The installations should interrelate with the unique landscape & outdoor environment and involve their own lighting elements. Attendees will view the accumulated spectacle of forms, colors, lights, and sounds on the lake waterfront, marshy beach, and find installations within the grass, bushes or trees, and around the building and wrap around tarmac.

MICA: THEN/NOW
January 16 – May 17, 2015
Following it’s initial presentation at both the Ethan Cohen Gallery in New York City and the Kunsthalle Beacon (KuBe) in Beacon, NY, several of my works will be included in the Noyes Museum exhibition of MICA: Then/Now. Included will be paintings from the 1970’s, a recently completed 6-panel, large scale Mylar painting suspended in front of their windows overlooking the lake, two small inflatables and a 20-foot inflatable “El Brujo”. This exhibition showcases artwork of alumni from one of the nation’s oldest and top rated art schools, Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). The works on exhibit have been created over the past 150 years. Viewers will experience how an individual’s unique vision has developed with examples of work created early in the artists careers, as well as by their current images or objects.
Curated by Mikel Frank and Barry Nemett, other exhibiting artists include: Stuart Abarbanel, Coleen Asper, Donald Baechler, David Brewster, Sara Dykstra, Aaron Fink, Mikel Frank & Gerard Amsellem, Joe Giordano, Peter Greaves, Rashawn Griffin, Gary Kachadourian, David Humphrey, Jane Irish, Kevin Kearney, Fawad Khan, Willie Kohler, Jeff Koons, Kevin Labadie, James Lipovac, Scott Malbaurn, Herman Maril, Joseph Maxwell Miller, Mimi Oritsky, Megan Pahmier, Jason Peters, Spoon Popkin, Courtney Puckett, Renee Rendine, Neil Riley, Deborah Rolig, Amalie Rothschild, Gina Ruggeri, Robert Salazar, Joyce Scott, Tony Shore, Aaron Sopher, Regina K. In the winter of 2013, through the Rebecca Hossack Gallery, I was invited to participate in Fabregé’s “The Big Egg Hunt” in New York City. Together with about 280 other artists, including the likes of Jeff Koons, Julian Schnabel, Carolina Herrera and Ralph Lauren, we were given a fiberglass form mounted on a metal rod and base and given free rein on what to create. Taking my iconic fish imagery and the concept of Russians’ love for caviar, I joined the two to create “Fish Egg”. This 3D egg shape was covered in a similar manner as my 2D paintings. A layer of acrylic medium was troweled over the form, metal leaf was applied, the imagery was painted and all was covered with acrylic resin.
There were numerous opportunities for many of the egg creations to be view throughout New York City over a period of about four months. Fish Egg was featured in several press events, exhibited at Saatchi New York and was even featured in a Sunday New York Times article. Fish Egg was installed in New York Central Park’s Yacht Club for one month and ultimately chosen to be auctioned at the grand event at Sotheby’s in April.
